Description

King Stephen Hotel

The building that houses the hotel was built in the 18th century, for the manor house offices. Between 1957 and 1987 archaeological research was undertaken in the castle, during which the base walls of buildings that had collapsed in the Ottoman period were excavated and exposed, the 10th century building including the chapel was restored, the lapidary was created and the surviving parts of the monastery were made accessible for the public. In the late 1980s, a restaurant was established to replace former office rooms, and a hotel was created just above it. Two additional storeys were added to the ground floor of King Stephen Hotel, thus giving the hotel the structure we see now.

As a result of the transformation works done in 2014, the hotel can receive its guests in a completely renewed form. Upstairs, the pilgrims' unit awaits its tired guests: it is a single room with 15 beds. Apart from that, there are 2 single rooms and 8 double rooms located on the same level, with an own bathroom for each, and shared kitchenette, laundry and drier room, as well as a community area. Downstairs, there are 9 double rooms, 4 3-bed rooms, and 3 studios partly in the tower section, offering relaxation for visitors.

Restaurant

King Stephen Restaurant is located in the eastern wing of the building, in the place where the manor offices used to exist. This section was originally built in the Baroque era. Guests are accommodated in two rooms with groin-vault ceiling: these rooms for 20 persons each offer a pleasant, romantic atmosphere and intimacy for a dinner or lunch. Hotel guests are offered their breakfast here. For bigger groups, tables are laid in the more spacious Saint Gellert hall linked with the Baroque rooms. Although this hall was attached to the original castle wall only in 1988, it has a Medieval atmosphere. It is popular as a venue for family events, parties or smaller wedding ceremonies.

In good weather, we usually recommend the enchanting castle terrace for our guests: the bright, sunlit terrace between thousand-year walls faces the ruin area, with lovely birdsong instead of the noise of the outside world. Visitors to the museum often sit and relax here with a cup of coffee or soft drink, but this peculiar environment is also a preferred place as a scene for candle-lit, romantic dinners, and grand family lunches. The King Stephen Restaurant offers homely, countryside cuisine, but we are willing to please our gests with any other ideas they might have, should they wish to taste different types of meals. We are offering both a la carte and have daily menus as well, which are regularly refreshed by thematic weekends and various types of special dinners.

Be our guest. You will be warmly welcome!

History of the Castle

Although the castle is also known as the “Pécsvárad Fortress”, this name may be misleading since the building complex has never actually been a fortress in the military sense. It did have walls and fortifications but these served the protection of those living inside against attacks by marauders. During the existence of the fortress it faced no serious military attacks which these structures would not have withstood anyway.
